Adaptec Launches 'Raid Everywhere' Initiative to Fuel Raid's Growth in India

'RAID Everywhere' Strategy Represents Storage Industry's Most Aggressive Move Toward Making RAID Technology Available to More Users in India

    New Delhi : October 12, 2000

Adaptec Inc. (NASDAQ:ADPT), the global leader in innovative storage solutions, today announced "RAID Everywhere" initiative in India. The initiative will accelerate RAID into mainstream PC servers and high-end PCs for business-critical data protection and performance. The announcement at a Press Conference included the unveiling of three powerful microprocessor-based Ultra160 SCSI RAID solutions combining Adaptec chip technology, compatibility and global support.

"More than 85 percent of today's whitebox servers, and nearly half of all PC servers shipped in Asia Pacific today don't have adequate RAID protection; that's an alarming statistic," said Kym Perry, Sales Manager, APAC region at Adaptec, "Critical data exists in businesses of every size, yet the benefits of RAID have simply not been widely available, due to cost, complexity or support issues. The goal of "RAID Everywhere" is to put RAID on every server and make it as ubiquitous as SCSI".

Expanding the Adoption of RAID...

Adaptec's "RAID Everywhere" initiative focuses on the following areas: awareness, education, technology, compatibility and support. Adaptec has simplified installation and support with new easy-to-use management software tools and 24x7 global customer care, and is developing new ways to extend the adoption of RAID in the marketplace, from offering a rich breadth of solutions, to educating the market on the latest technology developments and applications.

Among the new offerings Adaptec announced today are two robust 64-bit Ultra160 SCSI RAID controllers, the Adaptec SCSI RAID 3200S and 3400S, that feature a ¾-size form factor, and come in two- and four-channel versions, respectively. Adaptec also introduced the SCSI RAID 2100S, a half-size, single channel Ultra160 RAID controller.

With these additions to its product portfolio, Adaptec now delivers the most complete line of RAID products in the industry, from entry- to high-end server offerings, and the broadest choice of interfaces, including ATA/UDMA, SCSI and Fibre Channel.

Meeting Customers" Needs...

"Adaptec's RAID solutions are tailored to meet customer needs, from low-cost servers using UDMA/ATA, to high-end SCSI- and Fibre Channel-based servers and RAID subsystems," said Kym. He further added, "Our complete line of RAID products offers the highest level of performance, fault-tolerance, compatibility and reliability in the industry".

Adaptec has long been committed to developing and delivering robust and affordable RAID solutions to the market. The company's pioneering RAIDPort RAID-on-Motherboard (ROMB) technology made RAID widely affordable, and its AAA-UDMA RAID card brought RAID 5 functionality to entry-level servers. Adaptec's acquisition of Maitland, Florida-based Distributed Processing Technology (DPT) last year helped the company broaden its product portfolio to include microprocessor-based RAID products, giving customers more choices for using RAID to protect their critical data.

Future phases of Adaptec's "RAID Everywhere" initiative will continue to focus on reducing the cost of RAID to end-users, advancing the technology and making RAID easier to use. RAID developments will be applied across new storage fabrics including Fibre Channel, EtherStorage, PCI-X and Infiniband. The company also plans to increase interoperability testing to include up to US$2.8 million in new equipment and a 50 percent increase in test-against systems and configurations this year. Technical support will also be enhanced with the launch of new Adaptec reseller educational programs on RAID later this year.
